Sittwe port of Myanmar under the control of India
Alternative way to contact North East Indian states
New Delhi – India has been given full responsibility for the operation of Myanmar’s Sittwe port. The management of Sittwe port will be looked after by ‘India Ports Global Limited’. The Ministry of External Affairs has approved the establishment’s proposal to look after the entire port on the Kaladan River at Sittwe. Sittwe Port was built in 2016 with the help of India at Sittwe, the capital of Myanmar’s Rakhine state. Myanmar’s Sittwe is India’s second foreign port after Iran’s Chabahar port.
Why is Sittwe port important for India ?
Kolkata port will be connected with Myanmar’s Sittwe port by sea. After this, it will be connected by road to Jorinpui in Mizoram. After the completion of this route connecting Mizoram, it will be easier for India to supply North Eastern states. This will also reduce the dependence on the Siliguri highway, known as the ‘chicken neck’, as it proves an alternative route for shipping goods to the Northeastern states. That is, due to the speed with which India is doing the work of expanding the connectivity of North East, China is going to get a shock.
