More than 30,000 Muslims join notorious gangster turned politician Mukhtar Ansari’s funeral
Ghazipur (Uttar Pradesh) – Notorious gangster Mukhtar Ansari’s last rites were performed at Kali Bagh graveyard. Only his family members were allowed to be present for the last rites.
More than 30,000 Muslims, however, joined the funeral and were present outside the graveyard. Police encountered challenges in crowd management, particularly those attempting to enter the restricted burial ground. Consequently, security personnel, including paramilitary forces, were heavily deployed around Ansari’s residence and the burial site.
Mukhtar Ansari’s life was marred by controversies and legal battles. His first encounter with law enforcement took place when he was just 15-years-old. From thereon, his criminal record burgeoned, with a staggering 67 cases lodged against him, ranging from murder to extortion.
In April 2023, he was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison for the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai. Earlier this month, he received a life sentence for his involvement in obtaining an arms license using forged documents.
Mukhtar Ansari was in jail in Banda, where he suffered a cardiac attack. He was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead. Though his family members claimed that the cause of his death was poisoning, the post-mortem report shows the cause of death as a cardiac attack. A judicial inquiry is also underway in this case.
