Uniform Civil Code to be implemented in Assam after the Lok Sabha elections
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hints that Muslims who engage in polygamy will face imprisonment
Guwahati (Assam) – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in Assam after the Lok Sabha elections, indicating that Muslims will not be permitted to practice polygamy. Chief Minister Sarma made this statement during his address to All India United Democratic Front party chief Badruddin Ajmal.

1. Badruddin Ajmal had previously stated that the BJP is attempting to provoke Muslims. He emphasised that if Muslims wish to marry more than once, no one can prevent them, as their religion permits them.
2. Speaking at Udalgiri in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that if Ajmal desires to marry more than once, there is still a chance; however, after the elections, the Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in the State. Subsequently, individuals who enter into second or third marriage will face imprisonment.
