Adopt a ‘unified diplomatic approach in support of collective interests’ : US schools India
Washington (USA) – Tensions are rising between India and the US over foreign policy and internal matters. After making statements on the Citizenship Amendment Act, arrest of Arvind Kejriwal, freezing of Congress party’s bank accounts, now the US has advised India on its relations with the Taliban. The US has told India to ‘adopt a unified diplomatic approach towards Afghanistan in support of collective interests’. Senior official of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs J P Singh recently visited Kabul. During this visit, he met top leaders of the Taliban. The US’ statement comes as a reaction to this visit.
1. According to the report of ‘Voice of America’, the US special representative for Afghanistan, Thomas West, has given the above advice regarding Afghanistan to the Indian foreign secretary.
2. A US spokesperson said it respects India’s need to pursue its national interests by engaging with the Taliban. Terrorism threats emanating from Afghanistan have long been a primary concern for the U.S. and India.
3. US sanctions on the Taliban are still in place. Many analysts have criticised this US stance; but still the US Government is adamant about it. The US Government says this will continue until the Taliban does not give women the right to education and work.

4. India has maintained its relations with the new Government in Kabul. Not only this, the relationship between India and the Taliban is now reaching new heights. India has taken this step after China recognised the Taliban ambassador. The US, on the other hand, is still sticking to its policy of isolating the Taliban Government from the world.
5. Former Pakistani ambassador Rustam Shah Mahmood said India wants to trade with the Taliban and gain access to energy projects in Central Asia.
6. An Indian official had said in a meeting with the foreign minister of the Taliban that Iran wants to increase trade through the Chabahar port built by India. The Taliban Government has announced that it will reduce Pakistan’s dependence on the port of Karachi by investing in the Chabahar port.
7. The US often warns the Taliban about Al Qaeda. India also faces the threat of Pakistan-backed Jihadi terrorists who are shedding blood in India. The Taliban has assured that it will not allow any terrorist group to use its land.
