Pakistan should abandon its claims on Kashmir : Pakistani Defence expert

Islamabad, Pakistan – Prime Minister Narendra Modi had embarked on a tour of Kashmir ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. It marked Prime Minister Modi’s inaugural visit since the abrogation of Article 370, which conferred special status upon Jammu and Kashmir. Against this backdrop, Pakistani defence expert Qamar Cheema has strongly criticised the Government and the Army of Pakistan, asserting that “Pakistan should abandon its claim on Kashmir.” Cheema has outlined the following reasons supporting his argument for Pakistan to relinquish its stance on the Kashmir issue.

1. The Kashmir issue is selectively remembered by Pakistan’s political class, often raised for popularity rather than presented as a consistent issue, even during elections. Furthermore, when India asserted its intention to reclaim Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), Pakistani leaders struggled to provide a coherent response.

2. The people of Pakistan have largely overlooked the Kashmir issue, preoccupied with numerous domestic challenges that demand their constant attention.

3. India has secured a multi-faceted triumph in Kashmir, both constitutionally and diplomatically. The abrogation of Article 370, subsequent validation by the Supreme Court, and India’s strategic positioning globally have placed Pakistan in an unfavourable light.

4. Western nations have abandoned the Kashmir issue, aligning themselves with India due to its significant economic status. Seeking to build a coalition against China, these countries encourage Pakistan to relinquish the Kashmir issue and forge ahead.

5. Pakistani media tends to sidestep discussions on Kashmir, exemplified by the lack of coverage on Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the region.

6. Residents of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) express dissatisfaction with Pakistan, as the promised dreams remain unfulfilled, leading them to reconsider their allegiance.

7. Kashmiris residing in India recognise the benefits of aligning with India, given its global standing and prestige, making them inclined to remain part of the country.
