If China had been treated like India, it would have suppressed us from all sides: Statement by a Maldivian official

Male (Maldives) – Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s love for China has strained relations between India and the Maldives. Nevertheless, there has been a surge in ongoing construction projects by India in the Maldives. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a Maldivian official remarked that if the Maldivian Government and its leaders had treated China as they have treated India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, China would have suppressed Maldives from all sides by now. Despite this, India is demonstrating generosity by swiftly completing these projects.

It is not the fault of the Maldivian people – Indian official

This year, India has increased its budgetary assistance from Rs 400 crore to Rs 700 crore. Indian officials believe that their Government does not want the actions of certain Maldivian leaders to hinder the development of facilities meant for millions of Maldivians, as it is not the fault of the Maldivian people.

Due to President Muizzu’s pro-China stance, India has acquiesced to the Maldives’ demand for the withdrawal of its troops. Instead, India will deploy technical personnel to replace these soldiers. Maldivian citizens and opposition members have expressed dissatisfaction with Muizzu’s approach.
