President Muizzu’s party loses mayoral polls of capital city Male
Defeat reportedly due to the anti-India stand of Muizzu
Male (Maldives) – Pro-India Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has won the elections held for the mayor’s post of the Maldivian Capital City of Male. The present opposition party, i.e., MDP’s candidate Adam Azim will be the new Mayor of Male. This post was earlier held by pro-China President Mohamed Muizzu. He resigned from the post to contest the Presidential elections. His party suffered a huge defeat in this election and its reason is stated to be people teaching him a lesson for Muizzu’s anti-India stand. Since the last few days, the relations between the Maldives and India have been tense due to India promoting tourism in Lakshadweep. MDP is led by former President Mohamed Solih, who is known to be a pro-India leader. With success in the mayor’s election, his party has got a new vigour.
