Airstrikes by Myanmar near Indian border
New Delhi – Myanmar initiated airstrikes on insurgent bases along the Indo-Myanmar border, prompting increased vigilance in Mizoram following the attack. However, specific details regarding the number of insurgents killed in these airstrikes remain undisclosed. The situation in Myanmar is deteriorating.
Insurgent groups challenge the Army
The military regime in Myanmar is grappling with challenges posed by insurgent groups. Intense clashes recently occurred in the northern Shan State, near the Indo-Myanmar border. Since the coup in 2021, the country has been under military rule. The military-appointed President issued a statement recognising that inadequately addressing the “insurgency” poses a significant risk of the country’s disintegration.
Insurgents control the border region
Insurgent groups opposing the Government have seized control of over 100 military outposts. The Government is losing its grip on crucial border crossings vital for cross-border trade, constituting 40% of its revenue. China has urged both parties to halt the conflict. China has invested billions of dollars in energy infrastructure in remote parts of Myanmar.
90,000 people displaced
Approximately 90,000 people have been displaced as a result of the intensifying conflict between Government forces and insurgent groups. According to the United Nations, around 50,000 people have been displaced in Shan State, where shelling and airstrikes persist, with some seeking refuge in China. Additionally, over 40,000 people have been displaced in the adjacent Sagaing and Kachin regions.
