This has now become unbearable and if we start using bulldozer, it won’t stop : Supreme Court
The Supreme Court reprimanded State Governments over pollution in Delhi
New Delhi – “We want it (stubble burning) stopped. We don’t know how you do it, it’s your job. But it must be stopped. Something has to be done immediately. Where is the reduction [in farm fires]? The only difference is you have suddenly sought to shift the blame on other states. It’s obvious why. But this can’t be a political battle all the time. Delhiites cannot be made to suffer because of severe air pollution for years. It is unbearable now. If we start using bulldozers, we will not stop”, the Supreme Court reprimanded State Governments over air pollution in Delhi. The Court also ordered Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to immediately stop the stubble burning.
It cannot always be a political battle
Reprimanding the Punjab Government, the Supreme Court said, ”Repeated discussions and assurances have been given regarding reduction in stubble burning in the fields but where is the reduction? Only one thing has changed in the last few years. All of a sudden you are blaming other States. It cannot be always a political battle. Delhi cannot be allowed to face the same problems for years. We are not saying that stubble burning is the only contributor but it is a significant factor contributing to Delhi’s pollution. The ever-increasing pollution is adversely affecting the health of children in Delhi”.
At this time, the advocates of the Punjab Government tried to present their side by saying that, “the problem caused by stubble burning is only for a few days”. On this, the Court said,” This is a strange problem of timing, but I think there is no seriousness about it”.
Editorial Perspective
These reprimands are unlikely to have any impact on irresponsible Governments, leaving the public to contend with life-threatening pollution annually. Consequently, the public believes that it is imperative for the Court to take a more proactive stance on this matter and actively work towards resolving the pollution crisis. |
