Israel will use ‘Sponge Bomb’to destroy the tunnels built by Hamas in Gaza
Tel Aviv (Israel) – Israel has launched a ground offensive in Gaza. According to the reports, Israel may also use ‘Sponge Bombs’ to destroy tunnels built by Hamas. Hamas terrorists operate through these tunnels. Therefore, experts believe that destroying this network of tunnels is a big challenge at present.
Use of tunnels to carry out terrorist activities
In 2006, Hamas built a network of tunnels in the Gaza Strip 80 meters deep into the ground covering an area of 360 sq.km. These tunnels are used for various purposes. Not only narcotics are smuggled through these tunnels that stretch to Egypt, but madarasas and mosques have also been built in these tunnels. These tunnels are widely used to carry out terrorist activities. Some experts believe that the maximum height of these tunnels is 6.5 feet and 3 feet in width. Some say that an entire city has been built beneath Gaza City through a network of tunnels. Here, activities ranging from accommodation of terrorists to keeping food items, building warehouses of weapons, etc. are done. However, no country has ever been able to fully understand the network of these tunnels.
How does Israel’s ‘Sponge Bomb’ work ?
A Sponge Bomb is a type of device that is enclosed in a ‘Safe plastic container’. It has two parts and they are filled with different chemicals. The parts are connected by means of a metal. After activating this bomb, both chemicals get together and through that a special ‘Foam’ is formed. This ‘Foam’ spreads rapidly around and then solidifies. If these bombs are detonated near the tunnels, they can completely block the tunnels. Israel’s attempt is that this will completely cut off the airflow inside and the terrorists inside will suffocate to death. This will render these tunnels ineffective. The bomb was successfully tested by the Israeli Army in 2021.
