New York (USA) – India has distanced itself from the resolution presented by Jordan regarding the conflict between Israel and Hamas in the United Nations General Assembly. India took this decision as there was no mention of Hamas, the terrorist organisation that attacked Israel, in this proposal. The resolution, presented on 27th October, also demanded unhindered aid to the Gaza Strip. Yojana Patel, India’s deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, said, ‘There is no justification for spreading terrorism. I call for the immediate release of Israeli citizens”.
Jordan’s resolution, titled “Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations”, was supported by more than 40 countries, including Bangladesh, Maldives, Pakistan, Russia and South Africa, while India, Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, Ukraine, Germany, and Japan abstained from this proposal. The US voted against the proposal. A total of 120 countries supported the proposal, 14 countries voted against it, and 45 countries abstained from voting.

India supported Canada’s proposal demanding the release of Israeli citizens
The amendment proposed by Canada and co-sponsored by the US asked for inserting a paragraph in the resolution that would state that the General Assembly “unequivocally rejects and condemns the terrorist attacks by Hamas that took place in Israel starting on 7th October 2023 and the taking of hostages, demands the safety, well-being and humane treatment of the hostages in compliance with international law, and calls for their immediate and unconditional release”.
India voted in favour of the amendment along with 87 other nations, while 55 member states voted against it and 23 abstained. The draft amendment could not be adopted, having failed to obtain a two-third majority of members present and voting.
Editorial Perspective
Like Israel, India too has been reeling from Jihadi terrorism. Against this background, in the event of a war ignited by terrorism, now India must try again and again to expose Pakistan-sponsored jihadi terrorism. |
