Rohingya women bought for up to Rs 1 lakh
Srinagar (Jammu-Kashmir) – The number of Rohingya Muslims in Jammu-Kashmir is increasing. They have been infiltrating since 2012. There are so far, 8,000 Rohingyas in the State. After a case of issuing a domicile certificate to a woman from Myanmar was exposed, many issues related to Rohingyas are coming to light. Anwara, a woman from Myanmar, married a resident of Kashmir and has been staying in the State for a few years. In 2020, she got a domicile certificate. After primary inquiry, a case has been filed against a woman, a facilitator, and an officer issuing such certificates. On interrogation of the accused for issuing fraudulent domicile certificates, it has been exposed that there is a nexus spread in Kashmir, which is involved in marrying off Rohingya women, that are illegally brought to the State, with old, disabled, and poor Kashmiris. These women are bought for anything between Rs 20,000 and Rs 1 lakh.
Drive against Rohingyas
The Union Government started a drive in 2021, to identify Rohingyas staying illegally in the State, under which 300 such illegal residents have been detained in a Centre set up in a prison at Hira Nagar in Jammu, after carrying out their biometric and other tests. Many clashes have been reported between the Police and those prisoners. Rohingyas are demanding release from this Centre or deportation back to Myanmar.
