Shamli (UP) – Women’s hands are not only for wearing bangles. Women are eager to carry weapons. Women appear to be keen on getting permits to carry weapons; this tendency among women has been increasing day by day since a few years. Many women from cities to villages have the weapon-licence. Eighty women in Shamli have weapons, 140 applications are pending for obtaining weapon-licence.

Weapons licence are allotted to women who are under life threat or living in crime-prone areas. Previously, men used to apply for a weapon licence, but for the last few years, women have been applying incessantly for the said licence. They claim, they can use the weapon as self-defence in an adverse situation. Pavan Kumar, the Right to Information Officer, found out that out of 10 applications for weapon-licence, four are from women.

Editorial perspective

It would not be wrong if anybody thinks that women are getting equipped with weapons because of the incapability of the Police to protect women, which has been proven from time to time.
