Manipur woman files gang-rape complaint against Kuki community mob

Imphal (Manipur) – A woman has reported being gang-raped at Churachandpur in Manipur’s Bishnupur District. Ethnic conflict erupted in Manipur, during which a mob from the Kuki community attacked and set fire to a woman’s house in Churachandpur. At that time the victim fled the house with her two children, sister-in-law and niece; but she fell while running. She asked her sister-in-law to go ahead with the children. She was gang-raped by five or six members of the Kuki community who were chasing them. In the Police complaint, the victim said that other members of the Kuki community joined them later. When the victim regained consciousness, she was in a house in the Meitei community.

Why did it take two months to file a complaint ?

Explaining why it took two months to report to the Police, the woman said, “Opening up about rape is seen as a stigma in society.” Fearing that ‘society will ostracise me’, I did not say anything at first to save myself and my family’s honour and dignity.”
