Bus driver in Karnataka forbids Muslim female students from boarding for not wearing burqa

Kamalapur (Karnataka) – A video of a bus driver forbidding Muslim female students from boarding for not wearing burqa has gone viral on social media. The driver said, “these female students will be allowed to board the bus only if they wear a burqa”. Due to this, the students could not board the bus. Although these students were wearing Hijab (Muslim women’s head and neck covering), the driver did not allow them to board the bus. The driver also said to these Muslim students that, “as you are a Muslim, wear a burqa, not a hijab”.

1. When the driver was questioned about this by locals, he said that, “the bus has broken down. Hence, the students are irritated. They boarded the bus despite being told that the bus was not in functioning order.”

2. Regarding this incident, State Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy assured to take action in this matter. Reddy also said that, “whatever the driver did, it is wrong. It is the right of those students to decide which outfit to wear.”
