Only Statues/Portraits of M Gandhi and Saint Thiruvalluvar permitted in Court Premises : Madras High Court
Court rejected the plea to erect Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s statue
Chennai – Madras High Court issued a circular in which the Court rejected the plea to display the portrait of Dr BR Ambedkar in the Court premises, stating that only the Statues/Portraits of M Gandhi and Saint Thiruvalluvar are permitted in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Court premises. It also issued order to remove the portraits wherever they were displayed other than those mentioned above.
In this circular, the High Court also mentioned its previous orders in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2019 and recently April 2023 with regard to same issues. The circular also stated that representations were being received from the Advocates’ Association from time to time seeking permission to display the portraits of National leaders such as Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in all the Court’s campuses. Hence, the Court reiterated all the previous directives.
