The case of Manipur’s ongoing riots

New Delhi – The European Parliament has adopted so-called an Urgency Resolution against India over the ongoing conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. India has strongly objected. The Official Spokesperson of Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi said, “We have seen that the European Parliament held a discussion on developments in Manipur and adopted a so-called Urgency Resolution. Such interference in India’s internal affairs is unacceptable, and reflects a colonial mindset. Indian authorities at all levels, including the judiciary, are seized of the situation in Manipur and are taking steps to maintain peace and harmony and law and order. The European Parliament would be well advised to utilise its time more productively on its internal issues.”

Notably the European Parliament held an urgent debate on the Manipur situation on 12th July 2023 in its current plenary session in Strasbourg. This discussion came just before Narendra Modi’s state visit to France on the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron as the Guest of Honour at the country’s Bastille Day Parade.

For the past few months, violence has erupted in Manipur, with the Christian Kuki community attacking the Meitei, a Hindu community. The conflict between the two groups is ongoing and so far more than 150 people have been killed and thousands injured.
