Dress code implemented in the largest and historic Jagdish temple of Udaipur

Udaipur (Rajasthan) – Wearing short clothes is now banned in the largest and historic Jagdish temple of Udaipur. People wearing short T-shirts, jeans, bermuda shorts, miniskirts, night suits, etc. will not be allowed to enter the temple. This information is displayed on the posters outside the temple. This temple is 400 years old.

Vinod, a priest of the temple, said, ‘We have appealed to devotees not to wear short clothes while visiting the temple. We have put up a board outside the temple, through which the devotees are made aware of the Hindu culture. Devotees are supposed to follow the rule voluntarily. However, if someone comes wearing a short dress, he/she will not be denied entry’.

Dinesh Makwana, Chairman of Dharmotsav Committee, which manages the temple, and convenor of Jagannath Rath Yatra Samiti, said, ‘Looking at the public sentiment, we have decided to ban short clothes inside the temple. We are appealing to devotees in this regard. There have been complaints about some tourists entering the temple after drinking alcohol. The Committee will take a decision on this soon.

Those who come dressed inappropriately can change the clothes before entering

If a person comes wearing a short dress, he/she will be provided proper clothing. Men will be given kurta, pajamas and women will be given separate clothes. Changing rooms have also been arranged. Therefore, those who come wearing a short dress can also enter the temple after changing their clothes.

Rather than each temple in the country taking this decision separately, an umbrella organisation of Hindu temples should be formed and declare a dress code for all the temples across the country.
