Media should exercise caution while reporting on Court matters : Kerala High Court

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – The Kerala High Court recently urged the media to exercise caution while reporting on Court cases. The Bench of Justices A.K. Jaishankaran Nambiar and Muhammad Nias has said that the media should be mindful about the harm caused to the litigants, by the unjustified comments by media based on oral remarks by judges, during the hearing. The Bench made the above observation while hearing a petition filed by Priya Varghese, against the judge’s order. The judge had directed the Kannur university to re-examine Priya Varghese’s credentials, for her appointment as an associate professor. The news was made viral by the media; because Priya Varghese had married to K.K.Ragesh, the private secretary of the Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan.

The Bench also clarified that the Chief Justice of India, Chandrachud had also appealed to the media to exercise restraint while publishing the news about the cases that are pending in the Court.
