An attitude of gratefulness towards people around us improves our mental health : Research
Blood pressure does not increase, and the heart-rate remains normal
New York (US) – A finding of the group researching under the guidance of the famous Psychiatrist and researcher Robert A Means concluded, “Expressing gratitude to a person gives psychological strength to us. Gratitude is a positive emotion. When this emotion is generated within us and is acknowledged by us then an awareness of there being good in the world is created”.
This research found that those who have an attitude of gratitude do not have blood pressure problems, and their heart-rate is normal. A study was conducted in this experiment. The participants were asked to make a list of all the positive things that happened in their lives and what was the effect it had on them. They were asked to write a letter of gratitude. From this activity, it was learnt that the participants not only benefited psychologically, but their depression and worry reduced too. Expressing gratitude daily led to an increase in self-confidence and contentment as well. Sarah Elgo, Psychologist of the North Carolina University says, relationships strengthens when gratitude is expressed towards acquaintances, friends and partners.
