Opposition to the imposition of ‘Darwinian’ curriculum by Christian and Islamic schools in Kerala

• State Government’s decision to teach Darwin’s theory even after the Union Government excluded it from the textbooks
• Looking at the opinions of the minorities, the Kerala Government is reconsidering the decision

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – Kerala’s private Christian and Islamic schools have started a front against the curriculum. They have expressed strong opposition to the supplementary textbooks that the State Government is planning to bring out in which information about Darwin’s theory will be included. A few days ago, after the change in the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) syllabus by Union Government, the Kerala Government had announced that it would circulate supplementary textbooks to teach the subjects excluded by the Union Government.

1. The Union Government had excluded the subjects of Mughal history, 2002 Gujarat riots and ‘Darwin’s theory’ from the syllabus.

2. Kerala School Education Minister V. Sivankutty had announced that the above subjects would be taught in Kerala through supplementary textbooks. It will be part of the State curriculum and it will be compulsory for students to study it.

3. Christians and Muslims have opposed this decision of the communist Government. It has been reported that the State Government is reconsidering the implementation of the supplementary textbooks after considering the opinions of the minorities.

4. Most of the schools in Kerala come under Christian and Muslim management. They have no objection to teaching lessons related to Mughal history and Gujarat riots but have serious objection to ‘Darwin’s theory’. This theory is believed to be contrary to the origin of man described in the Bible and the Quran. The theory rejects the role of God on earth. That is why Christians and Muslims have shown opposition.

What is ‘Darwin’s Theory’ ?

The theory proposed by a scientist named Charles Darwin is related to biological evolution. According to this theory, the ancestors of humans and animals are the same. Darwin says that nature evolves through gradual change. In this it is not mentioned anywhere that life was created by the will of God.

This proves that the communist Government does not value the opinions of Hindus. Now the Hindus should put pressure on the communists in an unified manner so that the history of the Mughals is not taught again !
