Global Water Crisis to affect India in the near future
|
New York (US) – Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, published a report on ‘Global Water Crisis’. According to the report, India is on the list of most severely affected nations due to the water crisis by 2050. In the coming decade, due to melting of ice and glaciers, water levels of River Ganga, Brahmaputra and Sindhu rivers will reduce. These rivers are called the lifelines of India. Ten primary rivers in the Asia originate in the Himalayas. Hence, if the Global Water Crisis aggravates, India, Pakistan and China will be affected by it. If the glaciers melt rapidly, India, Pakistan and China may experience floods.

200-300 crore population of the world is currently facing water shortage for at least a month during a year. As per the UN’s report, by 2050, half of the urban population of the world, i.e. about 170-240 crore people will have to face water crisis.
About 40 crore people from various Indian States are dependent on the River Ganga, which is 2,500 km long. If the water level of this river reduces, it will affect people across several States.
