Rahul Gandhi gets 2 years jail term in a defamation case !
Court immediately grants bail !
Surat (Gujarat) – Surat District Court sentenced Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to two years in jail in a defamation case wherein he had remarked on Prime Minister Modi’s surname. In 2019, during a rally in Karnataka, Rahul Gandhi asked, how all thieves have Modi as their surname. The Modi community strongly objected to this remark and filed a case against Gandhi. The final hearing of this case was held on 17th March 2023, but the Court did not give the verdict. On 23rd March 2023, the Court gave a verdict of a two-year jail term for Gandhi, holding him guilty in the case. He was immediately granted bail and allowed 30 days to challenge the sentence in a higher Court.

Rahul Gandhi can challenge the verdict in High Court. If a stay order is passed against the Surat Session Court’s decision, it will save Rahul Gandhi’s membership as an MP. In the absence of a stay order, however, he will have to go to the Supreme Court, to appeal. If the Supreme Court stays the order, his membership as an MP would be saved, else, Rahul Gandhi will have to undergo two years of imprisonment and will be debarred from contesting election for the next 8 years.
