1. On October 22nd, the Union Government set up a commission under the chairmanship of Former Chief Justice Balakrishnan to examine the current situation of the Schedule Caste people who have converted to other religions. They have been given a period of 2 years to file a report.
2. As of now, reservation benefits are available only to Dalit Hindus, Buddhists, and Sikhs. Several petitions are pending before the Supreme Court seeking reservation benefits for Dalits who converted to Christianity or Islam.
3. The Congress-led UPA Government formed commissions under the Chairmanships of Ranganath Mishra and Sachar Commission. Reports of both these Commissions recommended that Dalit Muslims should be given representation. The Sachar Commission said that it was seen that the social and economic conditions did not change even after the Dalits converted to Christianity and Islam. In 2007, the Mishra Commission report recommended that the Schedule Caste should be separated from the bias of religion.
VHP opposes giving reservation !
Vijay Shankar Tiwari an office bearer of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad said that VHP was of an opinion that Dalits who converted to Christianity and Islam should not be given the benefit of reservation. Similarly, those who are doing ‘Ghar Wapsi’ to the Hindu Dharma should get the benefit of reservation.
