SC scraps PIL against forming committees for implementing UCC
New Delhi – The Supreme Court approved committees set up by the States of Uttarakhand and Gujarat to review the Uniform Civil Code. SC dismissed the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the decision of the Gujarat and Uttarakhand Governments to form committees to implement UCC. While refusing to hear the petition, the Court said that these committees should be established under the jurisdiction of the Government.

A Bench of Chief Justice Dhananjay Chandrachud and Justice P.S. Narasimha said, “What is wrong with it ? They have constituted a committee under their executive powers under Article 162.” Constitution gives such power to the States to form a committee. Setting up such committees cannot be said to be ultra-vires the Constitution”. If the petition is not withdrawn it will be rejected. Later the petition was withdrawn.
