Justice Dhananjay Chadrachud going to be the 50th Chief Justice of India
New Delhi – Supreme Court Judge Dhananjay Yashwant Chadrachud will be the 50th Chief Justice (CJI) of India. Present Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit has recommended DY Chandrachud as his successor to the Centre. Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was sworn in as the Chief Justice of India on 26th August 2022 and is going to retire on 8th November 2022. His tenure was of 74 days.

The Government had sent a letter to the CJ Lalit on 7th October requesting him to recommend his successor. Accordingly, CJ made the above announcement before all the judges. As per the rule with regard to seniority Justice Chandrachud happens to be the most senior judge of the Supreme Court. Justice Chandrachud will take charge of the post on 9th November 2022. He will continue on this post till he reties on 10th November 2024, that means he will continue to be the CJI for 2 years.

First example in the History of SC that the son becoming CJ after his father
Justice Chandrachud’s father, Yashwant Vishnu Chandrachud was the 16th CJI of the nation from 22nd February 1978 till 11th July 1985. He was the 1st and the only CJI remaining on this position for the longest period up to now. The son becoming the CJI after the father is the 1st example in the history of Supreme Court.
