Religious fanatics become violent in Varanasi and Bareilly during Muharram processions
Lucknow (UP) – Violence erupted during Muharram processions in Varanasi and Bareilly Districts. They used sharp weapons in the violence, injuring many people.
Massive stone pelting took place in the Murzamurad area of Varanasi. A dispute over the cutting of a Jamun tree for the procession to pass easily at Kardhana Barajat resulted in violence. When a Hindu shopkeeper standing in front of the tree objected to cutting the tree, he was beaten up and his shop vandalised. When the Police and Hindu organisations reached the spot, there was tension in the village.
