Anti-Hindu ‘The Week’ publishes objectionable picture of Deity Shiva and Goddess Kali

The intention underlying the display of this image is not to hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus, but to make them comprehend the denigration –  Editor, Dainik Sanatan Prabhat

New Delhi – ‘The Week’ has published an offensive picture of Deity Shiva and Goddess Kali. Strong reactions are being expressed by Hindus against the magazine in this matter. BJP leader Prakash Sharma has filed a Police complaint against the magazine in Kanpur. The Police have registered a case too.

An article by Bibek Debroy, Chairman of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council and a respected author, was published in ‘The Week’ on 24th July. The offensive picture of Deity Shiva and Goddess Kali accompanied the spiritual article titled ‘The Fire Has Seven Tongues and One of these is Maa Kali’. Upon learning of this, Bibek Debroy was distraught and tweeted his resignation as a columnist for the magazine on 4th August. In his letter to ‘The Week’ magazine’s editor, Bibek Debroy expressed his concern with the publication’s choice to assign the picture of Maa Kali to his article without his approval.

Bibek Debroy said, ‘Instead of printing such a picture, many good pictures of Goddess Kali could have been published. My permission was not obtained for the published image”.

Although this is an attempt by ‘The Week’ to gain cheap popularity through such pictures, it has also provoked people’s emotions. Due to this, a question arises about the ethics of The Week. It takes time to build trust, but such an act breaks the trust. I am resigning as a columnist in The Week’.

Editorial Viewpoints

• Do magazines like ‘The Week’, which denigrate Hindu Deities, ever disrespect Muslim or Christian religious figures ? Hindus should now boycott such periodicals which have flourished on the money of none other than the Hindus !
• Absence of a law that severely punishes those who denigrate the Hindu Deities is the only reason why anyone insults Hindu Deities in the Hindu-majority India. The Central Government should enact such a law at least now !
