Court lifts ban on slaughterhouses in Muslim-majority Manglaur, Haridwar
Dehradun – The Uttarakhand High Court has lifted the ban on slaughterhouses in the Muslim-majority city of Manglaur, Haridwar, for the occasion of Bakrid on 10th July. On the occasion of the Kumbh Mela held in Haridwar in March 2021, the BJP Government in Uttarakhand banned all slaughterhouses in Haridwar District and revoked their licenses. This order was applicable for the areas of 2 Municipal Corporations, 2 Municipalities and 5 Nagar Panchayats.

Faisal Hussain moved to Court against the Government’s decision. In the petition, he had sought permission to slaughter animals at the abattoir in Manglaur municipality, as 90 per cent of the population living there is Muslims. In a hearing in the Uttarakhand High Court on 7th July, the Court said it is permitting the lifting of the ban on slaughterhouses in Manglaur town for Bakrid. The slaughter of animals can only be done in a slaughterhouse, the Court ordered.
