Pyongyang (North Korea) – North Korea is observing a mourning period of 11 days to mark the tenth anniversary of former leader Kim Jong il’s death. The country has banned laughing for 11 days. The citizens cannot even demonstrate signs of happiness or consume alcohol during this period. Any celebrations and even grocery shopping are banned. The offenders will be declared as ‘ideological criminals’. Additionally, if a family member dies, people are not allowed to cry out loud and the body must be taken out after the mourning period is over. Kim Jong il ruled North Korea from 1994 to 2011. His younger son Kim Jong Un is the current dictator.
