New Delhi – Munawar Faruqui, the comedian, made insulting statements and jokes on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, due to which the devout Hindu organisations agitated and subsequently, all his shows were cancelled. Hence, Faruqui declared his career as a comedian coming to an end. After that, the progressives, secular leaders, actors, etc. came forward to support him. Taslima Nasreen, the Bangladeshi writer, tweeted, “I made statements supporting the freedom of speech of Munawar Faruqui, but those supporting the freedom of speech of Munawar Faruqui do not support my freedom of speech.” Taslima Nasreen has written about atrocities on Hindus by religious fanatics in Bangladesh in her book ‘Lajja’. Because of this book, the religious fanatics planned the murder of Taslima Nasreen, so she had to take refuge in a foreign land. For the last 20 years, she has not gotten any assistance or support from the progressives and secularists, tweeted Taslima.
I wrote articles and statements on social media defending Munawar Faruqui’s freedom of speech. But the most people who support Munawar Faruqui’s freedom of speech, do not support my freedom of speech.
