The Government told the SC, Indian military needs better roads due to recent developments at the Indo-China border. On the other side of the border, there has been immense development. China has developed infrastructure to support runways for flights, helipads, roads and a network of trains. On this background, the Indian military requires broader roads to carry heavy vehicles to borders. The objective of this project is to connect four sacred places such as Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath over 900 kilometres. The defence forces experience challenges in moving military, tanks, heavy artillery and machinery from one point to another. Until 1962, even the food supply till the borders was delivered on foot. The objective will fail without highways. Hence, the Government also asked to grant permission for 7 meters broad highways.
