Mangaluru (Karnataka) – A vehicle was decorated as a ‘Swatatrya Rath’ on 15th August for the celebrations of Independence Day at Kabaka, in Puttur Taluk of Dakshina Kannada District. The portraits of Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Bos, Lokmanya Tilak as well as Swatatryaveer Savarkar were installed on the cart. The Social Democratic Party of India disrupted the vehicle with the demand to remove the portrait of Swatantryaveer Savarkar. They attempted to tear the banner while demanding to replace the portrait of Swatantryaveer Savarkar with Tipu Sultan’s portrait. The Gram Panchayat President Vinay Kumar Kalleg along with other members tried to resist SDPI leading to fisticuffs. Gram Panchayat authorities tried to calm down the protesters. However, the protesters were not in a position to listen to them. Instead, demanded to remove Swatantryaveer Savarkar’s portrait and replace it with Tipu Sultan’s portrait. They raised slogans against Swatantryaveer Savarkar and Gram Panchayat. Puttur Police Inspector, Gopal Naik by the support of the Police force quelled the protest. The procession then proceeded through the village under Police protection. The protesters Azeez, Shameer and Abdul Rahman have been taken into judicial custody.
Puttur BJP MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor visited the Panchayat after the incident and took the information from Gram Panchyat President. He informed the reporters that the protesters staged the protest by the incitement of some religious fanatic’s organisations from Kasargodu and Bhatkal.
