Dowry is paid in 95% Indian marriages : World Bank report

New Delhi – The World Bank report states that dowry is still a widespread phenomenon in India. 40,000 marriages from 1960 to 2008 from 17 States in India were studied. It was observed that dowry was given in 95% of marriages. Before 1975 and after the year 2000, on average a groom’s family spent around Rs. 5,000 on gifts to the bride’s family while gifts from the bride’s family to the groom’s family cost Rs. 3,50,000.
