Glacier breaks near Joshimath in Uttarakhand causing flood like situation, more than 150 people reported missing

Adverse times have begun in India, and its fiery form is slowly revealing itself. The sudden glacier burst near Joshimath leading to flash floods ascertains this. If this kind of incidents occur repeatedly then it won’t be surprising that the entire Indo-gangetic plain will be badly affected.

Joshimath (Uttarakhand) – A glacier crash in the Himalayas on Sunday morning caused a flood like situation and washed away an under-construction hydro power project on Dhauli Ganga river. More than 150 workers working in the hydroelectric project in Tapovan area have gone missing and two river bridges have also been washed away. The bridge connecting Malari to the border and used by the Indian Army to reach the border of the country has also collapsed. Two-hundred ITBP personnel have been rushed to the spot for rescue operations. Another 50 personnel from ETF of the army have been deployed for reconstruction of the bridge. The situation is constantly being monitored by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Due to the flooding river, high alert has been issued in UP, up to Kanpur situated on the Ganges, although only Chamoli District is affected. The administration has promptly acted to bring the situation under control. The District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police have rushed to the spot. The rescue operation is on and NDRF is assisting in evacuating the people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are constantly monitoring the situation and have instructed the Uttarakhand Chief Minister T S Rawat about the rescue operations.

  1. The incident is reported from Reni, in the Chamoli District near Joshi Math area. Due to the glacier break large amounts of water flowed into the river dam, leading   to a heavy damage to the Rishi Ganga Power Project on the Dhauli Ganga River. As the wall of the dam was damaged, the water of Dhauli Ganga River rose greatly, causing floods that destroyed the houses along the river bank, leaving many people missing.
  2. The administration has appealed to the people residing on the banks of the Alaknanda River along with the Rishi Ganga River to move to safer places. People stranded in the Alaknanda area have been evacuated.
  3. As a precautionary measure the flow of the Bhagirathi River has been blocked to prevent the flooding of the Alknanda River said Chief Minister T S Rawat who had also reached the spot immediately.
