India dangerous and violent for Muslims! – Malafied report by South Asia State of Minorities
|
New Delhi – ‘Intolerance in India has risen in the last two years and the country has become dangerous and violent for Muslims’, according to a report by the South Asian State of Minorities. ‘Intolerance towards Muslims has increased’, the report said. The report looked at how much freedom is enjoyed by citizens of South Asian countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, especially the minorities.
Aspects presented in the report
1. In all these countries of South Asia, democratic values such as individual freedom and interfaith harmony are being strangled.
2. Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians who were deported to India from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh by the end of 2014 were given the right to apply for Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Reform Act; however, Muslim refugees from these Muslim-majority countries are not included.
3. Attacks on minorities had increased in the past year. In February, Hindu and Muslim riots broke out in the Shahinbagh area of Delhi during an agitation against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Later, during the coronavirus period, ‘Islamophobia’ was felt across the country after the Tablighi Jamaat programme at the Muslim Training Centre in the Nizamuddin area of Delhi. By this time the centre of the coronavirus had become the epicentre of the epidemic.
4. Human rights advocates, activists, organisations, journalists, liberal intellectuals, artists trying to speak out against the monopoly of the Indian Government are under constant attack. Human rights activists in India, who seek to protect against discrimination, often face arrests, violence, arrests and harassment in criminal cases.
5. Two news channels in Kerala have been temporarily banned for reporting on the Delhi riots and against Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
