Bangladesh does not like India’s Hindutva : Asif Mahmud, Student leader

  • Bangladesh advisor’s anti-Hindu statement on India’s Hindutva

  • Controversial statement by Asif Mahmud, student leader and advisor in the Bangladesh’ interim Government

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Asif Mahmood, a 26-year-old student leader who was the main face of the student protests against the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Government, said, ‘The BJP is running the Government in India. They have a manifesto for Hindus, which we oppose. The people of Bangladesh do not like Hindutva’. Asif is currently also an advisor in the interim Government of Bangladesh. He had earlier claimed that the attacks on minorities, especially Hindus in Bangladesh, were politically motivated.

In an interview with an Indian newspaper, Asif Mahmud said,

1. Many leaders in India are spreading hatred against Bangladesh. Our people are angry with India because India is supporting Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina is staying there and giving speeches. If India sends her back, its bilateral relations with Bangladesh will improve.

2. In 2019, the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens Act were passed in India. We opposed it. This could lead to a large number of Muslim immigrants from India coming back to Bangladesh. This policy is against Muslims.

3. We are against those who were with the Sheikh Hasina Government. This is the reason for the anti-India sentiment. Therefore, people in Bangladesh are demanding a ban on Indian products. After Sheikh Hasina came to power, 10,000 members of the opposition were put in prison. (This is nothing but oppression. This is the dictatorship of Bangladesh’s interim Government! – Editor)
