New Delhi – India and Sri Lanka on Monday agreed on measures to bolster strategic and security cooperation even as visiting Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi he wouldn’t allow his country’s soil to be used against Indian interests. The Indian side used the meeting with Dissanayake, on his first foreign visit after becoming president in September, to raise New Delhi’s concerns about the visit of Chinese surveillance vessels to Sri Lanka.

President Dissanayake said that Sri Lanka will move forward with the help of India and will continue to support the neighbouring country. About two years ago, we faced a major economic crisis. India helped us a lot to get out of that quagmire. Prime Minister Modi has told me that, Sri Lanka holds an important place in India’s foreign policy. Prime Minister Modi also told me that, I am happy that you have chosen India for your first foreign visit after becoming the President. This visit is creating new energy in the relations between the two countries. We have adopted a futuristic approach to our partnership.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Dissanayake offered flowers at the Samadhi of Mohandas Gandhi at Rajghat. He said that Gandhi’s eternal values of truth and non-violence are inspiring humanity all over the world. (Now Hindus in India are realising how senseless these values are. These so-called values led to Hindu suicides; their country was divided into two! – Editor)

Editorial Perspective

The Government of Sri Lanka allows a Chinese ship spying on India to dock on Sri Lankan port, ignoring India’s opposition. Therefore, Dissanayake should say that not only the land, but also ‘Sri Lanka’s maritime areas and ports will not be used by anyone’.
