Lok Sabha likely to pass Waqf amendment Bill
New Delhi – Ongoing winter session of Lok Sabha is likely to pass Waqf amendment Bill. The Joint Parliamentary Committee is holding in-depth discussions to suggest necessary changes to the Bill. It is expected that the original bill will be passed in the Lok Sabha without making any important changes in it.
Opposition to 4 main amendments
There are 48 amendment points in the Bill, out of which, 4 points are strongly opposed by INDI alliance member parties in the meeting. These main amendments are, appointing a non-Muslim to Waqf Board, appointments instead of elections on the Waqf board, the District Collector having the power to determine if a land belongs to the Waqf Board and retrospective verification of Waqf Board land registration.
No possibility of dissolving the Waqf Board
According to reports, some of the Joint Parliamentary Committee members, as well as several others who presented some proposals, have suggested to dissolve the Waqf Board. There was no detailed discussion regarding that point. It was not taken seriously at the Union Government level. It is unlikely that any such suggestion will appear in the Committee report.
