Obscene content on OTT platforms is causing enormous harm to Indian culture, MP Arun Govil says in Parliament

New Delhi – The winter session of Parliament is underway, and famous actor Arun Govil, who portrayed Lord Ram on television and is a newly elected Member of Parliament, addressed Parliament for the first time. He said that the content on OTT platforms today is such that you cannot watch it with your family. Much of what is shown on OTT is highly obscene, and this is causing immense harm to Indian culture.

Govil further said, ‘I want to ask the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting what mechanisms are in place to stop the illegal broadcast of obscene and sexually explicit content on social media ? The Government must take strict actions in this regard. All content providers must be brought under regulation’.

Need to act more strongly against OTT Platforms, Govt says
In response to Govil’s concerns, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that this is an important issue. In the age of social media and OTT platforms, many things are getting out of control. There is a need to act more strongly against them.

Editorial PerspectiveFor the past 3-4 years, many people and organisations have been raising their voices to regulate OTT platforms. However, no concrete action has been seen from the Government on this front. Government should prioritise the protection of culture and ensure that societal values are preserved ! |
