Muslim-majority Karimganj district in Assam changed to Sri Bhoomi

Guwahati (Assam) – The name of the Muslim-majority Karimganj district in Assam has been changed to Sri Bhoomi. This decision has been taken in the cabinet meeting held on 19thNovember. The Government has said that this decision will show the cultural heritage of the district.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that there is no word Karimganj in Bengali or Assamese language. We will change the names which have no linguistic support. Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, who came here in the year 1919, called this area Sri Bhoomi.
