‘ISRO aims at sending Indians on the Moon by 2040’ : ISRO Chief
Jhunjhunu (Rajasthan) – “We aim at sending Indians on the Moon by 2040. We shall need a space station because an intermediate medium is required to send humans on the Moon. It will require research on microgravity and several specialised space missions. We have a synopsis ready about the programmes required to be carried out in the next 50-60 years. The Government has allotted Rs 30,000 crore for this programme,” informed ISRO Chief Dr S Somnath. He was speaking at a convocation function held at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.

Points made by Dr Somnath,
1. Space tourism will emerge significantly
Elon Musk, a businessman from the US is planning to send humans on the Moon and build a colony for lakhs of people on the Mars. People can buy tickets to Mars. Space tourism has bright future, and India has tremendous potential to get into this field.
2. Already more than 50,000 satellites are providing telecommunications and internet services
It is no longer difficult to enter space and know the rules. Entering space has become much easier now. Anyone can launch a satellite. It can be easily done even in the Universities and Institutions. The cost of launching a satellite has reduced so much that today, space has as many as 20,000 satellites. More than 50,000 satellites are providing telecommunication and internet services which is an amazing number.
