Bangladesh Government opposes Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party march
Hundreds of workers were arrested, some beaten up
Dhaka (Bangladesh) – In Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party activists were assaulted during their march on November 10th. The incident took place in front of the Awami League central office at ‘Bangabandhu Avenue’. Bangladesh’s interim Government did not give permission to the march and deployed large number of army and Police troops to control the march. Noor Hussain, leader of Awami League’s youth wing called ‘Jubo League’, was assassinated on 10th November 1987 during an anti- Irshad movement. Awami League had announced to hold a march to commemorate this day.
1. This was the first major movement of the Awami League party after the collapse of the Government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5th this year. The party had invited common people and activists by posting on social media. “All those who believe in the values and democratic principles of the liberation war of 1971 should participate in the march at Zero Point,” it had appealed.
2. The party also demanded the removal of anti-democratic forces and the re- establishment of democratic rule under the leadership of the Bangladesh Awami League. Soon after the Awami League announced the march, the country’s interim Government denied permission for the same.
3. Shafiqul Alam, Media (Press) Secretary to Interim Government’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, said that the current form of Awami League is ‘fascist’ (fundamentalist). Such a fascist party will not be allowed to protest in Bangladesh.
4. In this regard, Border Guard Bangladesh said that 191 units of Border Security Force have been deployed in the capital Dhaka and across the country to maintain law and order on the occasion of Noor Hussain Day.
Hundreds of Sheikh Hasina supporters arrested
Awami League activists and supporters were cracked down on by the Police in Dhaka in the wake of the march. Bangladesh’s military arrested hundreds of activists ahead of the protests. Before the agitation, Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh National Party and Jamaat-e- Islami had announced that they would not allow the Awami League to protest.
Arrests of those celebrating Donald Trump’s victory
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police said that few Awami League workers were arrested while trying to hold a victory rally in support of US President-elect Donald Trump.
Editorial PerspectiveIn Bangladesh, the interim Government is not democratic, it is a dictatorship. The global community is silent about this. This shows that the world wants instability and unrest in Bangladesh. |
