China angered by the opening of ‘Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre’ in Mumbai

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning

Beijing (China) – Taiwan has inaugurated a new branch of ‘Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre’ in Mumbai, prompting strong objections from China, which has issued a formal protest.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated China’s stance that there is only one China, with Taiwan being an inseparable part of it. She emphasised that China firmly opposes any official interactions or exchanges between Taiwan and other nations, including the establishment of representative offices. Mao urged India to manage Taiwan- related issues carefully and avoid engaging in any form of official dialogue with Taiwan, while also stressing the importance of maintaining stable China-India relations.

With the opening of the ‘Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre’ in Mumbai, Taiwan now has three offices in India, alongside those in Delhi and Chennai.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Taiwan is an independent country, and India is ready to cooperate with such nations. India is not a puppet of China, nor is it obligated to follow China’s whims.
  • China’s expansionist ambitions are well known globally, and India has experienced them firsthand. India must respond to China in a language it understands.
