Vegetarian vs non-vegetarian dispute in the Supreme Court Canteen

  • Bar Association called off the decision of making only vegetarian food during Navaratri

  • A group of Advocates opposed the decision

New Delhi – A devout Hindu advocates group has written to the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCORA), protesting the decision against serving only vegetarian food during Navaratri. The letter says that the decision completely disregarded Hindu religious sentiments. 133 advocates from the Supreme Court  are in support.

Another group of Supreme Court Advocates were antagonistic and expressed their concern over a particular menu during Navaratri period could start a wrong trend. After the letter from devout Hindus, the decision was revoked on 4th October.

The text of the letter by Advocate Rajat Nayar

“This decision is not in line with the tradition of the Bar Association. It only shows intolerance and lack of respect for each other. There are only two workdays in the Supreme Court during Navaratri, i.e. Thursday and Friday. The main canteen was requested to serve vegetarian food on these two days. For the members of the Bar, request for only vegetarian food for two days, could be easily  made to any one of the 6 to 7 canteens in the Supreme Court premises. However, the decision that was taken, has done permanent damage. I protest this unilateral, insensitive decision officially.  Through this letter, we are keeping it on record to avoid any such unfair treatment in future.”

Editorial Perspective

It is totally anti-Hindu attitude. Would the Bar Association give the same treatment to other religious festivals ?
