Exclude cows from the list of animals

Shankaracharya Avimukteswarananda’s demand to the Union Government

Shankaracharya Avimukteswarananda

Bhubaneswar (Odisha) – Cow has been placed under the category of animals in the Union Government list; but in Indian culture cow is called ‘Devi’. The significance of the cow as mother has been explained. Those who believe in Sanatan Dharma call cows as mothers. Therefore calling a cow an animal is an insult to Sanatan Dharma and the followers of Sanatan Dharma. We should carry forward our tradition. As a part of the same, Swami Avimukteswarananda Saraswati, Shankaracharya of Jyotish Peetha in Badrinath, Uttarakhand, has demanded that the cow should be excluded from the list of animals circulated by the Union Government.

Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand has organised the ‘Gau Pratishtha Dhwaj Pratishtapana Yatra’. This Yatra has recently reached Odisha. This time he made the above demand while talking to journalists.

The Government should make a law for the protection and conservation of cows

Shankaracharya said that the purpose of this yatra is to protect the cow and serve the cows. I am here for the Gau Pratishtha Dhwaj Pratishtapana Yatra. The main demand of our yatra is that the Government should enact a law for the protection and conservation of cows. After passing the law people will also
understand the seriousness of this and Sanatan Dharma. It will change the way people think, the way they look at cows. He also clarified that this work will continue till the Union Government does not make a law.

Editorial Perspective

Why does Shankaracharya have to make such a demand ? Why does the Government not understand this ? Is the Government willing to accept this demand now ?
