India and Israel were going to destroy Pakistan’s nuclear project

Plan aborted owing to USA

Tel Aviv (Israel) – In the last few days, the Israeli army has been launching attacks against the Jihadi terrorist outfit Hezbollah in Lebanon. In opposition to the Israeli attacks in Lebanon, Iran launched the biggest missile attack on Israel. Israel has threatened to retaliate against Iran. According to some experts, Israel might target Iran’s nuclear projects, but Israel’s greatest ally USA has asked Israel not to do that. In 1981, Israel had destroyed Iraq’s nuclear project in Osirak. Israeli Air Force had crossed the international borders of 3 nations in order to strike Iraq and even managed to come back having launched a successful attack. With the support of Israel in 1982, India too had planned to attack the Pakistani nuclear project. However, USA had objected it and hence the plan was aborted. A news piece in connection with this has been released on the Navbharat Times website.

Israel had proposed to assist India

Israel had proposed to assist India to destroy Pakistan’s nuclear project and had even prepared a plan for the same. Let us understand what the plan was and why it was never executed.

a. India and Israel had been in contact with each other for a long time. Albeit, formal diplomatic relations between India and Israel were established in 1992.

b. In 1984, India and Israel had planned to execute a secret mission in Pakistan. Both faced a treat from Pakistan’s nuclear programme. In 1965, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, then Foreign Minister and later President of
Pakistan had expressed the desire to make a nuclear bomb. He had said, “Pakistanis may sustain themselves on grass or leaves but Pakistan shall get a nuclear bomb. After the defeat against India in the
1971 war, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto took the reins of Pakistan in his own hand and started work on his nuclear programme.

India and Israel’s anxieties

Pakistan’s nuclear programme was based on stolen information from Europe and China. Pakistan had begun to develop a nuclear capability since the latter half of the 1970’s and throughout the 1980’s. It was a matter of grave concern for both India and Israel. India received information that Pakistan was making nuclear weapons at Quetta near Islamabad. India knew that any nuclear weapon that Pakistan could get would have New Delhi as its target. At the same time, Israel feared that a Pakistani nuclear bomb would prove to be a great asset for its Arab enemies. India and Israel’s Intelligence Agencies, R&AW and Mossad began collaborating with each other with respect to the Pakistani nuclear bomb.

A plan to carry out an air strike in Pakistan

Experts believed that Israel and India had made a plan to carry out an air strike in Pakistan. The plan was for both the nations to come together and attack the nuclear capability centre in Pakistan. In 1981, Israel had attacked Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor and destroyed it. Soon after that the Pakistani Intelligence Agency informed its Government that India and Israel were planning a similar attack on the Pakistani Nuclear Reactor.

In order to attack Pakistan, Israeli air crafts would have to take off from the Jamnagar air base in Gujarat. F15 and F16 fighter planes were going to be used in this attack. However this information has never been validated. Adrian Levy a journalist has written on the issue that after the Israeli attack on Orasik, a team of Indian officials had reached Israel. These included both Intelligence as well as Army officers.

How USA sabotaged the plan

In 1982, Washington Post and in 1984, SB News of USA reported that Pakistan’s nuclear centre would be attacked by India and Israel together. These news items led to pressure being mounted on India to not launch any direct attack on Pakistan. Israel however proposed that it could attack Pakistan on its own. All they required was the permission to use the Jamnagar air base.

As per the Israeli plan, its planes would have flown over the Kashmiri mountain ranges undetected by the Pakistani radar and attack the nuclear site near Islamabad. In 1984 Indira Gandhi, the late Prime Minister of India had granted permission for the plan, but US Intelligence Agency, CIA alerted Pakistan about the same. India and Israel decided not to proceed ahead with the plan after that.

Editorial Perspective

It should be noted that USA was never India’s friend, isn’t one now and shall never be one in the future too.
