Dr Sandeep Ghosh, Ex-Principal of R.G. Kar Hospital questioned for 64 hours
The then deputy superintendent of the hospital, Akhtar Ali, has levelled serious allegations against Ghosh
Kolkata – Incessant protests have been going on in Kolkata against the rape and murder of a 31-year-old female doctor at R.G. Kar Hospital here. On August 21, thousands of doctors participated in the biggest ever march near Swasthy Bhavan (Health Building) here. The CBI questioned Prof. Sandeep Ghosh, the Ex-Principal of the hospital, for over 64 hours. The then deputy superintendent of the hospital, Akhtar Ali, who had accused Ghosh of some serious misdeeds last year, has levelled fresh serious allegations against Ghosh. Ali said Ghosh was involved in several illegal activities, including the sale of unclaimed bodies, and was involved in smuggling bio-medical waste and medical equipment from the hospital till 2023. No stern action was taken against Ghosh, despite he was found guilty in the investigation conducted by State Vigilance Commission after a complaint against him. Dr Ghosh resigned from his post at R.G. Kar Hospital in protest of the murder of a lady doctor. Hours later, he was appointed as the principal of the Kolkata Medical College. The Kolkata High Court reprimanded the government for this and sent Ghosh on indefinite leave.
Akhtar Ali claimed –
1. He was transferred on the same day as and due to the investigation report was submitted (by him) against Dr Ghosh.
Akhtar Ali had sent the investigation report opposing Dr Ghosh to the state health department, the Governor of Bengal, as well as the President; but the health department did not take any action in this regard. Ali himself was transferred from the hospital after that. Ali said that on the day I submitted the investigation report, I was shunted out. Two other members of the inquiry committee were also transferred. I did everything in my capacity to save the students from Ghosh. But I failed.
2. They were taking bribes from students!
Ghosh used to demand bribes to pass medical students. Some students were deliberately failed in the college.
3. Prostitution in a hospital rest room ?
Some prostitutes were being brought to the hospital’s rest room (‘guest house’). I had confirmed it myself. I installed CCTV there; but over time, I also noticed that they had been removed down. There was a facility of accommodation for a junior deputy superintendent of police to attend night shifts; but ever since girls were brought in from outside, the deputy superintendent was denied accommodation.
Threat to life for raising voice against Dr Ghosh !
Since, Akhtar Ali levelled serious allegations against Dr Sandeep Ghosh last year, he was not only transferred but had also received death threats. He said, “On my daughter’s mobile phone also we started receiving threats. Safety of my family should be priority. I am now working in a private hospital.’’ Ali could not be reached for comment when contacted by a representative of ‘Sanatan Prabhat’ to seek more information.
