Laws for protecting doctors should be amended and made effective

An open letter from the president of the IMA on the murder of a female doctor in Kolkata hospital

RV Asokan, President, Indian Medical Association

New Delhi – Laws protecting doctors should be amended and made effective. Indian Judicial Code should be strengthened. Indian Medical Association President RV Asokan said that one should not fall prey to India-hating conspiracies (of ‘Deep State’). RV Asokan expressed his feelings regarding the gang-rape and murder of a 31-year-old woman doctor in Kolkata. The incident took place on the night of 9th August at Kolkata’s famous R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. In this context, Asokan has written this open letter.

Asokan further added –

1. One million candles were lit after the death of the victim. The millennial drums of war rang out. Every Indian family lost its daughter. The mothers were furious. The fathers cried silently.

2. Junior post graduate doctors (resident doctors) hit the road first. They did not sleep for the next seven days. Their awareness and firepower are the hope of the nation. They work 100 hours a week. They did not tolerate the opposition.

3. Doctors are not orphans. It has been 77 years since Independence. There should be laws that can protect doctors.
