Tehran (Iran) – Ismail Haniyeh, the Chief of the terrorist organisation Hamas, was killed in a missile attack in Tehran. His bodyguard was also killed in the attack. Haniyeh usually resides in Qatar, but he had come to Tehran for the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, when the attack occurred. Although Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack, nor has Iran held Israel responsible, there is speculation that Israel is behind the killing. Both countries remain silent on the matter to avoid political complications.
Haniyeh joined Hamas in 1987 and took its leadership in 2017. In December 2019, he left the Gaza Strip.
Under Haniyeh’s leadership, Hamas carried out the most brutal attack on Israel in 75 years on 7th October last year.
Haniyeh had two marriages and 13 children with his first wife. He married the second wife, who was the wife of one of his friends killed by Israeli soldiers. Many of Haniyeh’s relatives had already been killed by Hamas.
Last November, Israel also destroyed Haniyeh’s house in Gaza, claiming it was used for terrorist activities.
